Had another outing this morning with Jay's hopper and again good results. This morning I added Green Sunfish and a Green/Bluegill hybrids to the catch. On my last cast I hung the fly in a tree and the leader broke; then, spent about 5 minuets poking the limb with my fly rod and finally dislodged the fly; original fly is still in perfect condition.
Maybe I'll tie the hopper on my 3 wt, 7ft next.

I took my bugs with me this past weekend but fishing was terrible, so I will post when I get a better day on the water.

I got mine, just in time for it to start snowing. Which it is. Will try to fish them next couple of weeks though

Bring them over here, Dusty. We're expecting temps in the 80s through the weekend. And it's not often we get to brag about how warm it is in WI.

Joe, you're not gonna hear me brag. I was perfectly content with low 70s and 40/50s at night. 80s and humid. Yuck. Lol

I'd agree with you, Eric. I was hoping to get in some fishing this weekend but it's going to be 90 degrees. I'll wait until next weekend when it's 65.

Here's the catch from Sunday that includes two green sunfish(1 and 2 from the left) and a sunfish hybrid(3rd from the right).
My first Hopper still in perfect condition.

Here's the catch from fishing today just before dark. These were caught with 3 wts, a CGR and a Native Custom. Hopper still in pristine condition.

Nice!
The Alien Bug is quite a durable fly. I have to tie a new one only when I loose it to a fly or in a tree where I cant retrieve it back.

The hooking capability is note able also: I have yet to lose a fish once hooked.
And another feature: the top being orange and the bottom a contrasting black makes the fly more easily removed from a blue gill's mouth; the direction the hook needs to be moved is easily discerned.

I often tie the orange black version.
The yellow gray version is a bit more natural looking. Does a great job too.

Thanks for the hoppers! I got them out on a local smallmouth river yesterday. Fished a Fenwick FF75 6 weight...it handled the flies well, even in the high wind that got up later in the day. In places the river is lined with tall grass filled with hoppers. Somehow the little buggers seem to avoid the water though...I saw no naturals blown into the stream, and the bass were slow to take the flies....hardly any surface bite at all....but I did get a couple. I could have caught as many "suckers" as I wanted...but not many bass.
(Actually, both the bass, and the walleye, were hungry for crawfish, so I got distracted from the hoppers for quite a while).

Can't believe I missed this! I have a new Orvis superfine glass 8' 5wt on the way and upcoming trips to Lake Hartwell in GA/SC and Yellowstone in the next two weekends. Nice work by those who have caught so far.

It is some form of sucker or chub....often thought of as trash fish.....but interesting because they feed on the surface...and bigger ones do fight pretty well.

I thought it would be a chub but wasn't sure.
Here's one I caught in Austria last summer.

JimR...
I'm jealous of all those sunfish those fish! Love the taped on reel on the CGR. I need to go to redo my post on replacing the reel seat with non photobucket pictures.

I used to catch a lot of chubs up in northern MN fishing brookies but never on the surface. I had a little trick an old timer taught me on catching the biggest brookies in a pool but could never talk about here on a fly fishing forum. Let's just say if the flies that were tied to imitate a brookies fin or his tail worked on them, well imagine...

Remember this was years and years ago and brookies, walleyes, bass, northerns, steelhead and salmon were a big part of our diet up there.

I catch a lot of large (16"+) creek chubs on dries in the upper delaware. It gets annoying. This year I caught a 20"+ creek chub on a size 2 conehead zonker there, my brother also caught a 5# sucker there on the same streamer...

Thanks Newfydog. The tape is adhesive tape and just keeps the rings from slipping. In the last couple of weeks I've had the reel fall off, once in the mud (not too bad) but another time in the canal and I had to yo yo it out of the water.

Now that you've brought up the topic, I've thought how nice it would be to have the newer model of the CGR 4/5 and 4 with the up-locking seats; but, I am wondering if the added weight of the different seat might affect the rods behaviour, which I really like.

Sorry to get off topic here.
