I recently spent a few days in Yellowstone park. I had plans to fish several sized waters there, so I took my bamboo Trifecta. For those who don't know, I designed a rod that has three butt sections of different lengths. This makes a rod that is 8', 7' and 5'9". The rod works with a 5wt as an 8' and 4 as a 7' and 3wt as the 5'9".

First I fished the Gallatin river inside the park with it at 7'. Took several rainbows on attractors.

Then I wanted to fish the upper Yellowstone above the falls. I have never fished the Yellowstone for trout so I figured it was time. I used the 8' version and fished green drake spinners. I took my first Yellowstone cutthroat trout, a monster just under 25".

I finished out the day fishing the upper meadow of Gibbon creek, taking many small native brookies on the 5'9" rod.

A successful testing of the rod. Had a great time.

That's excellent, I've seen some other rods with a similar concept, generally an extra grip that fits to the middle section to make a shorter lighter rod, but never seen it done with 3 different rod combinations. Very neat.
Nice cutthroat, well done

nice all around report.have a couple cane rods and always wanted to at least use only the bottom 2 sections by making what you did.just the handle with a female ferrule.now i know it is practical.

Looks like you had a very nice trip. Am curious as to how the Yellowstone River cutthroat fishery is doing. Was there in September of 2008 and fish were very scarce. Has the fishery rebounded? In the 80s there were so many fish that when a hatch was on it looked like someone was throwing pebbles in the water. Hope to make it back in the next few years.

Thanks everyone.
You have to remember, I experimented with many tapers, tweaking here and there, to come up with a workable arrangement at all three lengths.
I also have a glass version also.

This was an offshoot of my "Duet" series I introduced in 2009, a rod with two butt sections.

A few more pics of the "Trifecta"

Oh, about the cutthroats, they are doing much better. The lake trout eradication is supposedly going well.

Kool! But note that you may be one of the last remaining flyfishers to catch a Brookie in the upper Gibbon River. That entire creek from Virginia Cascade up stream to Grebe Lake is scheduled to be poisoned out with Rotenone this summer. The National Park Service is taking all Brookies out with an attempt to replace them with Wes Slope Cutthroats and Grayling. That section on the Gibbon will probable be fishless for two to four years. Fingers crossed.

I know. I wish they would just leave well enough alone. ....
