Well, now that you bought the 4 Oatey caps you obviously need 4 Primes.

One in hand, one inbound. That's half right there. And we haven't even got to Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Christmas yet. ;-)

hmm... I've owned a CGR 5/6 for two years and it's been out of the tube once for about 10 minutes. I consider it an emergency backup, and thankfully I haven't had any rod emergencies.

Bass Pro and Cabelas merger is going through. So who knows what will happen. Doubtful they'll keep two lines of glass rods going. So I will probably be picking another Prime or two. Which after lawn casting I like a lot better.

I know they merged, but a smart company like Bass Pro would hopefully be smart enough to leave Cabela's alone and let them continue to sell popular products and make money.

Del Gue,

Many folks here look down on Cabela's glass and they think if you buy more than one you should be be buying higher end glass. You have to test them out for yourself and see if they make you happy.

Personally I enjoy them and I enjoy Classic Glass in the higher wts.

I know folks here who have had 400 or 500 rods and still enjoy fishing their Cabela's glass.

But, honestly maybe we just don't cast well enough to appreciate the more expensive rods.

The thing you don't want to do is get caught up in the idea that buying fancy rods and reels has anything to do with fishing. I spent twenty years chasing rods and reels and wasting money and time that would have been better spent chasing fish.

At that price, I'm considering buying another Prime 7'1" 4wt as a backup. I think it's a roll-casting champ on small streams, and it balances so fine with a number of Martin tuna cans.

I've never had a trout tell me it won't take my fly because my fly rod didn't cost enough.

Also, others can chime in on this, I think most Primes are pretty good with advertised line weight except for the 8wt, which I think is a better 5/6wt.

I have all but the 8wt., and they seem true to weight when fished with old-school (333-444) Cortland DT lines.

There is a tendency for flyfishing to be somewhat pretentious, and affect the demeanor of a rich man's sport...thus you have nets costing over $100, even though guys land much bigger fish in salt with a much less expensive net. Same holds true for rods, reels, line, etc.

I am not pretentious, nor am I rich. I look at the pics of hotdish and others on this forum. They catch fish, they catch many fish, and sometimes they catch big fish. often using Prime's or CGR's or other such. That's not to say that a Barclay or a Steffens or other such rods, or the nicer reels, are not very nice, and have fine attributes. Surely, they do. And before the smoke clears I'll quite prolly have a Barclay and a Steffens.

But at my skill level, I prolly couldn't discern the difference in feel between an expensive rod or a less expensive rod. I have much to learn about trout and trout fishing. I do have an Orvis rod that I bought many years ago. But these CGR's and Prime's and that Orvis will catch fish while I learn more about trout and trout fishing. I do not put on airs, and regrettably I am often blunt to a fault. But in the end, it's about having fun, enjoying oneself, enjoying being out on a lake, river, stream, or creek, catching fish, or trying to, and less about bragging about the tackle one uses, for me anyway.

In fishing, as in hunting, and a number of other sports, it's more the Indian than the arrow that determines success or failure. I have what I have, and I am satisfied. That is enough.

It's not the tool. It's the fisherman and hunter that's successful.

No prob, bruh. I'm here for ya. :)

I have 2 Bachelor degrees, but in relaxed venues I use relaxed verbiage. 'Prolly' gets used pretty often, along with 'I dunno' and 'mebbeso'.

This is ridiculous. I've been watching Cabelas...about once a week I go on there, hoping that their Prime sale will be over.

I mean, how long can a freakin' sale last, anyway? For crying out loud...

And every time, sale's still on...those suckers are still $80. I go on vacation in about 5 weeks. Glacier and Yellowstone. I need money to do that. I don't need another rod.

Keep getting the reverb from grassnglass: "Might want to buy a Prime while on sale. No guarantee they will be selling them in five years. Hope they will, but never know."

So I just now ordered the 7' 4 wt. And now I'm done.

Finished.

No more rods. For a while. Focus now will be on reels and line, but not until after I get back from vacation. Later than that. Maybe around Christmas.

Fiberglass rods be worse than crack...truth.

I have never cast or fished a Prime. I have however spent a lot of time on the water with the CGR. I am a fan of the 5/6 and the 7/8.

The 4/5 is nice as well. It does like a 444DT. But I have found myself leaving it in favor of a 7'6" Cane & Silk 4/5 lately for my day-to-day trout rod. Of which Mike is building another now as a matter of fact. :)

The 5/6 is a great nymphing/streamer rod. One of my favorites. I can find nothing negative to say about the rod, whether in performance or comparison. It is rigged with an SA WF5F Frequency magnum now and rally seems to like it.

The 7/8 throws a WF7F Orvis Hydro bass taper line and #2 bass bug and down like there is no tomorrow. Only negative I can say is that I have cast my tip twice. But that could very well just be me.

And yes, while they are not the ONLY rods I own or fish, they have left some spendy rods collecting dust lately.

I'm trying to tell myself I don't need the 5wt prime, I already own a 2, 4, 5/6 and 7/8 CGR. I did buy the 4wt prime, loved it, gave it to my pa... who also loves it. It casts beautifully with cortland 444 mated with a redington zero reel. The rod is light and balanced.

Prolly end up buying the 5 anyhow, just because I hear it is awesome.

BTW, prolly is also in my daily verbage...lol

I had the 5wt prime for a year. It is a fun rod to be sure. You won't regret it

I haven't purchased a rod in over a month.

... Unless you count the blank I just bought.

For the sake of my family, I never let a rod I can't live without go idly by. Such frugal selfishness would not be fair to them. Unless of course you consider the life insurance. :)
