I think I've acquired the best of the Primes: 6' 3 wt, 7' 4 wt, 7' 5 wt.

Next will be to acquire 3-4 reels, but that may take a while as a financial emergency may be forming up just over the horizon that will require significant assets.

Future rods will be towards the other end of the spectrum...8-9' 5 or 6 weights. It gets windy in the Rockies, and everything I've read says get a longer rod to fight the wind.

Delighted to provide the entertainment, Cameron! When I wrote that it was unclear to me whether I was trying to convince you guys or myself! :lol

The 7' 4wt has become my go to rod for the trout. It's slooooooow, slower than all my other glass rods. It's great.

Agree, the 7' 4 weight Prime is a sweet rod.

Last week I picked up the 6' 4" 4 wt Prime and fished with it in Colorado. It is also a very sweet tool. It was great for the brushy creeks we fished.

We are moving so today I hosted s garage sale. A few days ago I met a nice young woman and her friend fly fishing a local pond. Chatted them up and gave some flies and pointers as both are brand new to the sport. I only had bass flies on me and told them if they stop by the sale I would give them a pile of trout and panfish flies. Did not expect the gal to show really but she did. Shes very inquisitive and loves the sport. She showed me her rod - a 9' 6wt graphite affair. I put a Prime 4 wt in her hands and she loved it. Said it was indeed easier to cast and more enjoyable than the heavy stick. She bought that rod and I threw in my CGR reel with two lines - a floater and intermediate. She should be set for most local trout and panfishing now with her two outfits.

Good for you! It's satisfying to hear about someone new to fly fishing, and experienced only with carbon, trying out fiberglass and immediately seeing the benefits. Your generosity may well have won another 'convert' to glass.

Stopped at my local cabelas today, wiggled the 4wt prime and seems nice. They had it marked at 119 but online is 80. I just put it back on the rack and walked away but maybe I should go back with the online price pulled up on my phone...
I don't need another rod but I keep telling myself "a one piece is hard to ship so buying one used in the future will be a pain".

They match the online price in the stores.

I was passing through Austin and stopped at the bargain cave. They had what looked like an unused 7'1", 4wt. I liked the one I had so much I wanted to pickup a spare.
I think they had it marked 20% of retail, so when I pulled up the sale they marked it 20% off sale price. Think I paid $69 total for it. It didn't have a rod sock with it, but did have an $89.99 Prestige Premier Reel and what looked like a new fly line on it. So I was fairly happy with the deal.

You never know what they will do unless you ask.

Barry

I dropped by my local store today and picked up a 7'1 4wt prime. It rang up for 55 dollars and I had a 10% off coupon on top of that.

I even made some new friends while I was there.

Just thought I would pass this along, I'm not sure if all primes at all stores are ringing up this cheap. For that price I should've bought the 5wt too.

A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do... ;)

I'll be out at the Cabela's in Kalispell the end of next month. I'm thinkin' mebbeso I'll walk outta there with something that makes me smile. Prolly not a rod, but could be a reel. I'll have to peruse their wares and see what strikes my fancy.

Lawn cast it this evening, I like it a lot. It will lay out a lot longer cast than I expected with a double haul, drift, shoot some line on the back cast.
I find it a good match for my casting stroke and very accurate at fishing distances.
Might have to go back for the 5wt.

For that price run, don't walk.

Lawn cast it again with a scientific anglers mastery MPX WF3 as opposed to a mastery DT4. I like them both. The DT4 feels punchier and lays out a longer cast easier I think. The WF3 is very accurate and presents well. I think it would be a good dry fly line. Which is odd because I normally like DT for dries.

The MPX is half size heavy so makes sense it works. I guess I'll have to fish it with both. And maybe get a 5wt rod for that extra reel and 6wt line on the shelf....

I ended up ordering the 7'1" four weight Prime and it is now my favorite rod. I can put a number 12 elk hair or humpy more or less where I want it and a six inch cutthroat is great fun (not to mention a twelve incher!) My only issue is threading the single piece rod down the canyon and through the salmonberries where I prefer to fish, but it's more than worth it.

Were vacation not this month, well, you know... ;)

Working today near my local Cabelas, spent my lunch break in the store. They had a few 5 wt primes marked 44.98 I will probably be back Saturday to grab one. Just thought I'd pass it on

Last month acquired a TFO Mangrove 8 wt with a Lamson Guru II reel. I gotta lay chilly a while. Christmas be coming, Black Friday sales, plus I gotta buy a wedding present for a wedding I gotta go to the end of December. Besides, my apartment already looks like a fly rod shop.

If I was feeling the urge to strike, it would prolly be on an Allen reel. 20% off on first order using the FB20 code.

I have two CGRs, the 7 footer and the 7.5 for 5/6 weight lines. I love three piece rods for the convenience of carry and travel they offer. The prime one piece would be a nice fishing rod, but one piece rods are a pain in the rear to transport, so I don't want one. Both my CGRs were bought on sale, the 7.5 only a couple of weeks ago. I like both with the heavier weight line. the 7.5 has only been lawn cast, but I can tell already it will be a favorite rod. It has nice light tip, but enough stiffness in the butt to qualify as the moderate/medium action I prefer. It throws 40+ feet with ease and a 6 weight Triangle Taper line.

Just got back from a visit to Cabelas. I was shocked to see they had several Prime rods in the closeout rack. I'm glad I got a chance to check them out in person. Quality is very good all around.

Ordinarily I would have assumed I'd want the 7'1" 4wt, but it felt way too whippy in my hand. But the shorter 6'4" felt really good! And the short 3wt would be a decent choice.

I had to spent a few minutes reminding myself that I don't need another 4wt rod, even at $50. But since I know it's sitting there, I can't say the decision is final yet.

Having too many rods is like having too much ammunition...there isn't such a thing.
