You will get good use out of that Cortland. No bragging rights, who cares--just good use for the money. It will never owe you anything even if you do get another reel for the Steffen. Let's be realistic. Several other reels for it. But you will still be using the Cortland as well.

I've got a couple of Crown IIs, they work well. Nothing special, but they hold line and get the job done!

Post a pick when you get it. I've got some leeda rimfly's that match some of the Crown II reels. The exposed rim, decent construction and adjustable drag make them one of my favorite "cheap" reels to just string up. Not all the rimfly/crown II reels had adjustable drags. It is a bit noisy for me when casting in the back yard, but other than that it is purrfect.

The exposed rim is really nice. It makes palming this reel very practical. I've landed large fish on this reel and only needed to add a bit of tension on the spool. Mine has a bit of end play, but the reel is very smooth.

I like these reels too. I've owned Leeda and Cortland (Crown) badged versions and i like them both. i dont think either had a drag but the palming rim is all i usually need for my fishing, if at all. I think the Cortland Rimfly had a drag adjustment.

I got the Crown II in the mail today and was very pleasantly surprised. I don't think the reel had ever even been spooled with backing. No marks at all, anywhere . There was no box but the seller stated that his dad would buy reels and put them in a drawer and never use them. I wonder if there's an old Marquis hiding around there. :) It's not built as heavily as I was thinking it would be, but for under 30 bucks I feel I got a great deal. Now just a loooooooooong wait for the Steffen!

Somebody sniped me on a Battenkill disk 5/6 just this afternoon! I've been kinda looking at some of the older Young reels, but it seems that most of them are RHW and I don't know if I could adjust to that.

I've used a Crown II for nearly 30 years. They're great workhorses.
It was the first fly reel that I ever owned.
Today it is not my main fly reel, but I still use it for trout every now and then.

I actually came across an old reel that belonged to my uncle this afternoon. It's an old Pflueger 1554 sal-trout that was on an old Sears and Roebuck fly rod that he gave to me about a year before he died. This was the first fly rod and reel I ever put my hands on when I was 6 or 7 years old. I gave the rod to my son and set the reel back in my leather working shop and forgot all about until today. Uncle Dave would take me out to a local pond and put a red worm on a little hook, make a little roll cast of about 10ft., hand me the rod and tell me to watch the end of the fly line. That rod and reel and those bluegills got me hooked on fly rods for life. I cleaned up the reel and greased it and will have to get a line on it. I will fish it some on the new Steffen!

The later models with two pawls are easily switched to LHW. Look for a Beaudex
http://www.jwyoungs.co.uk/beaudex.htm
or one of the later Pridex Lightweights. These were also sold as Battenkill Lightweights.

Should be able to get a not-too-battered one of these for under $100, and they are fine reels.

So after picking up a Crown II, and not being able to leave well enough alone, I was looking around the web for a used Marquis. That's when I came across a new Hardy LRH for $149 and lightly used Princess for $150 - both are in th US and have free shipping. I'm gonna have to pull the trigger on one of them, but which one?

The Princess is WAY too big. An LRH is fine. And $149 is a good price for an LRH. But there's nothing wrong with your Crown until you find a Marquis, if that's what you really want. You've got time to be patient and keep an eye out for one on eBay. If you are very patient, you can probably even find a used Hardy Golden Prince for $150 or so. And THAT would look REALLY nice on your new Steffen 4/5.

I figure that if I pick up the lhr and take care of it i could get my monies worth, should i decide to sell it later on. The Golden Prince is a great looking reel too! Dang it, Crusty, what are you tryin' to do to me? :P

I will echo a few others and say that a Battenkill looks absolutely great on a Steffen.

Well, I ended up ordering a new Hardy LRH yesterday. I decided to bite the bullet and spend more than planned, but $149 seemed like too good of a deal to pass up. Thanks for all off the suggestions, guys........Doug

A choice you won't regret! Never met a Hardy I didn't like! I still have the LRH Lightweight I purchased new in the 70s. I since bought a beater Princess. Can't go wrong with Hardy!

That's a fair price and a very nice reel. It should suit the Steffen perfectly. Enjoy!

The Hardy LRH Lightweight sounds like an excellent choice. I have been using the SA System 5 (made by Hardy and the same as their same era Marquis) on my Steffen 3/4 and it balances nicely. A backup reel I use is the LL Bean Pocket Water.

Just a little update on things, I received my "almost mint" SA System 6 in the mail today. The only marks on the reel look as though the reel was put spool side down in the case and the back plate was slightly scratched when closing the zipper on the case. It included the box with the customs stamp of June 15, 1970, and all the original paper work. All for the price of $142 + $3.50 shipping. I sure hope that rod gets here soon or I'll have to get a bunch more to house these reels! :lol I'll try to see if I can get some pics posted. Thank you to all of my enablers.

Congrats on the reel.
I've had a few SA System reels; still have an 8 and a 9.
They are addictive. They have such a sweet sound.
