Outdoor humor writer Patrick McManus passed away the other day. He also wrote a series of Sheriff Bo Tully mysteries, and taught at Eastern Washington University for over 20 years (English, Creative Writing and Journalism).

I loved reading his outdoor humor...it always truly touched my funny bone...and he really struck me as being a kind and happy soul.

RIP Mr. McManus.

He was a funny guy; my second favorite after the great Ed Zern. I guess Mr. McManus is playing checkers with ol' Rancid Crabtree in heaven now...

Rest in peace!

Tight lines,
Bob

Every time I read one of his stories I tended to get sore abs from laughing. His humor really went overboard. I don't know of another writer that had such a sense of the ridiculous.

i have all of his books- whenever i am feeling down in the dumps, i read his books, along with Gene Hill, Bill Tapply and our own WD. Brings me right back to smiles.

Patrick McManus is a terrific read. Highly recommended.

Sorry to hear the news -- he was a longtime favorite columnist of mine in Field and Stream and never failed to put a smile on my face.

He brought a lot of joy with his writings. Rancid Crabtree, Retch Sweeney, The Troll, Crazy Eddie Muldoon, Al Finley will always be with us.

Barry

P.S... Haven't many of us had a dog like Strange at some point in our youth. I had a couple old coonhounds that had to be related to him, at least in spirit.

Enjoyed many of his books. "A Fine and Pleasant Misery" and "They Shoot Canoes, Don't They" were two favorites from years ago.

As for the dog named Strange yes that pretty well sums up a few dogs I knew in my youth. To paraphrase the late, great Mr. McManus: when we first met the dog we called him Stranger, as we got to know him, we dropped the r.

That really saddens my day. His books were my favorites. He took me back a long time, to when I was just a goofy boy with few worries. I owe him a big 'thank you' for the memories he brought back for me. Tight Lines up there Patrick!

I have all his books. They accompanied me on deployments to many unhappy places. The "Grasshopper Trap" and "Gun Running Past Your Wife" 2 that have always stuck with me.

RIP Kind Sir
