I've been avoiding fiberglass fly rods (and this forum) for years. The last thing I need is another obsession. The faster the graphite the better has been my motto. But I've recently been bequeathed a handful of noodley old yellow and brown sticks and the fascination that I've been avoiding, the itch that I've feared all these years, has become alarmingly real.

I've gotta know.

Thanks for your patience, and your pity, as I start my tumble down this rabbit hole.

Mike

Welcome, MikeSep! The progression goes like this: first, you take one of the glass rods fishing and think, hmmmm... this aint bad, sorta does the work for me; then, over time, more of the fast carbon sticks sit in the basement while you decide which fiberglass action you want to have on the day's trip. That's after you stop overpowering/over-accelerating the rod with your CF casting stroke. Your experience may vary, of course.

That is a darn good description of the adjustment to 'glass if coming from graphite. I can only add, you won't be going down a rabbit hole. You are coming out of a bottomless pit and into a refreshing wellspring. Welcome.

Mike,

Did Cameron do this to you? Looking forward to seeing this play out on the blog!!! And here, too, of course.

Be not afraid. There's some good glass out there that isn't noodly, and some good glass that is. And every iteration in between. You're in for a h3ll of a ride!

Marty

I asked at the Orvis factory "why would you go back to making such a thing?" I now have two of the new Orvis glass rods and about 20 more of all age and size. They are stored in the wine cellar, and I think they must be breeding down there. The graphite rods have as much dust on them as the old Cabernets.

PS, +1 on showing us what you have. Even the yellow rods have fans here!

Welcome! I like to say I learned how to fly cast on graphite, but I learned how to fly fish on fiberglass.

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome and commiseration. I appreciate it and look forward to the interaction.

Cameron's been trying for years. Hands me a stick of glass and says Try this. I do. Cast it a few times, smile, and hand it back as quickly as I can. It's like not wanting to pet that new puppy, knowing that if you hold it too long it'll end up going home with you and you don't need another dog.

I fear that's about to change.

Just as a rule of the club, you aren't allowed to call a fiberglass flyfishing rod a "stick." That is a new-age term reserved for graphite poles.

My Mother use to beat me with a stick (switch) when I was young and STUPID - I often had to cut it myself from our bushes. :( Fishing rods ain't sticks - brings back too many bad memories.
