Been a fly rod guy for 30 plus years now. Started with graphite, then I was bitten by the bamboo bug...badly bitten. About 4 years ago I shattered my ankle on a fly fishing trip. Not long after that my father died. I Am a firefighter/ paramedic, and was diagnosed with severe depression and PTSD. I gave up the passion I once loved. Not long ago I casted a cabelas cgr rod. I had never used glass before, but it was the best feeling rod I had casted. The bonus was the price! I have a 7 year old son who loves to fish, and he is my reason to be. We have taken a few trips, and next week we are going back to where I had my accident for his first "big boy" trip. My fly fishing evolution brought me to this forum, to learn more about glass

Well, I have a 570, a 466, and a 576. I'm saving my pennies to get a rod built , at some point, but for now, I just watch around and see if anything comes up for sale that I can't live without.

Scottcan, sounds like the 4, 4/5 and 5/6 CGRs. I have those three also. I've never fished bamboo and you mentioned you have. Wondering how a bamboo compares to a CGR.

Greetings, Scottcan.
I'm rather new here as well, and have been bitten by both the bamboo and glass bugs. I'm in NM as well, just outside Albuquerque.
I hope you and your son have a wonderful trip!

JimR - Unfortunately, my bamboo and CGR collection don't really overlap with similar lengths and weights so a comparison isn't very fair. But depending on the build and taper bamboo can be quite slow and delicate (I have a Leonard 50 with which you could take a nap during the back cast) or quite fast (Payne 101 clone).

My favorite taper is on a payne 102. It doesn't flex into the butt as much as much as the cgr, and is a little bit slower. Both types of rods make me happy to cast.

Hiking & fishing in wilderness soothes my soul. Enjoy this trip with your child. There are alot of NM fishers here. If you want info on the Gila or Pecos watershed, feel free to ask friend.

I somehow missed this. Welcome! WestTex is the man to go to about the Gila and Pecos for sure. I have insight on some other waters and would be happy to discuss them via PM. If you are in ABQ let's meet up!
